Abstract
--------------- IN ENGLISH: It is relatively easy to imagine the characteristics of a place with a good quality of life and examples such as good employment conditions, organized and modern agriculture, restrained mass tourism, etc. are almost intuitively imposed. The biggest problem is devising specific methods to achieve a space which provides good quality of life. This paper is focused on Shucksmith's (2018) definition of a "good countryside", which is a rural space characterized by four elements: repair, relatedness, rights, and re-enchantment. In other words, a "good countryside" is a valuable space that is well equipped with infrastructure, where people care about each other and where the ethical principle of respect for human, political and other rights applies. The image of a "good countryside", in this case a "good island", is taken as a goal, and the method of realization of said goal is found in the model of the capitals framework (Gkartzios et al., 2022) where, through proper utilization of built, economic, spatial, and socio-cultural capitals, we achieve the desired image of the island that is in line with Shucksmith's (2018) "good countryside". Since the spatial framework of the paper is the island of Brač, predominantly a rural area, for its purposes the data was collected through interviews with the female population of Brač to emphasize the often-neglected female perspective. Also, for the purposes of this presentation, the topic of agritourism is underlined as an example of strengthening the importance of local agriculture and food in order to seize opportunities for additional strengthening of the economy and intersectoral cooperation. By combining Shucksmith's (2018) model with the capitals framework model (Gkartzios et al., 2022), a new model was created that contemplates island development not only through goals but also through concrete methods. By applying it to the female population, an important insight into the idea of a "good island" was obtained from an often marginalized social group, especially in rural areas.
