Abstract

The HAND in HAND: Empowering Teachers programme is a universal group-based intervention for socio-emotional and diversity awareness learning among teachers experimentally evaluated (a randomised control group experiment, including a pre- and post-measurement) in five European countries. Despite efforts to align the implementation of this intervention, considering fidelity as well as adaptation, there was significant variation in the detected effects across countries. In this paper, we discuss the contextual transferability of socio-emotional and diversity awareness learning interventions within the theoretical framework of Bronfenbrenner’s bio-social model of development using comparative case study methodological approach. We focus on the embedding of teachers’ social and emotional competencies as well as diversity awareness in the countries’ policies, the national characteristics of the teaching profession and teachers’ professional development, and other contextual specifics of the implementation. We detected potential contextual influences in all Bronfenbrenner’s systems that may have contributed to the diverse effects across countries.
