Abstract
--------------- IN ENGLISH: The social integration of the contemporary generation of youth in Croatia is burdened by the difficulties that generate the deceleration and delay of this process, and consequently the persistence of negative demographic trends. In this paper, the attention is focused on the dynamics and quality of socioeconomic independence of young people and on some aspects of the social environment. Some of the identified problems that hinder optimal socioeconomic independence of young people are the inequality of educational opportunities and the inability to achieve personal educational ambitions, the mismatch between educational and professional aspirations and the labour market needs, the high exposure to precarious work and the delayed housing independence. The analysed indicators pointing to the non-stimulating social climate included the low confidence of young people in social and political institutions and their perception of insufficient social evaluation of individual competences and abilities. It was concluded that it was a set of various unfavourable social conditions and circumstances of relatively long duration, due to which the unfavourable demographic trends could be mitigated, but not reversed by particular measures.
