IN ENGLISH: This study explores the factors influencing Croatian fishers’ decisions to stay in or leave the profession, a key issue for generational renewal in fisheries. Analyzing data from 191 small-scale (SSF) and large-scale (LSF) fishers, it applies the Pollnac and Poggie framework, supplemented by economic, environmental, and institutional trust variables, to analyze motivations for staying or leaving. Results show that while income is a key factor for both groups, SSF fishers also prioritize self-actualization, environmental concerns, and trust in regulations. LSF fishers, however, are mainly driven by economic factors. These findings highlight sectoral differences in workforce retention, emphasizing the need for tailored policies to support sustainable fisheries management and recruitment. The study contributes to discussions on labor dynamics in fisheries and provides insights for policies ensuring the sector’s long-term viability. --------------- IN CROATIAN: Ova studija istražuje čimbenike koji utječu na odluke hrvatskih ribara da ostanu u ribarskoj profesiji ili je napuste, što predstavlja ključno pitanje za generacijsku obnovu u ribarstvu. Analizirajući podatke prikupljene od 191 ribara iz malog (SSF) i velikog (LSF) ribarstva, u istraživanju se primjenjuje okvir Pollnaca i Poggija, nadopunjen ekonomskim, okolišnim i varijablama institucionalnog povjerenja, kako bi se analizirale motivacije za ostanak u profesiji ili njezino napuštanje. Rezultati pokazuju da je prihod ključan čimbenik za obje skupine, dok ribari u malom ribarstvu dodatno naglašavaju samoostvarenje, okolišne zabrinutosti i povjerenje u regulativu. Ribari u velikom ribarstvu, pak, ponajprije su vođeni ekonomskim čimbenicima. Ovi nalazi upućuju na sektorske razlike u zadržavanju radne snage te naglašavaju potrebu za prilagođenim politikama koje podupiru održivo upravljanje ribarstvom i zapošljavanje novih generacija. Studija doprinosi raspravama o radnoj dinamici u ribarstvu i pruža smjernice za politike usmjerene na dugoročnu održivost sektora.
