Abstract

IN ENGLISH: This study investigates the complex interplay between teacher–student and peer relationships in shaping academic engagement during early adolescence. Drawing on a sample of 6048 students from public elementary schools in Slovenia, the predictive power of these relationships beyond academic achievement was examined. Results revealed that both positive aspects of teacher–student relationships and perceived peer support significantly contributed to academic engagement. Moreover, an interaction effect indicated that peer support predicted engagement only in the absence of negative teacher–student relationships. These findings underscore the pivotal role of teacher–student relationships in fostering academic engagement, suggesting that peer support cannot fully compensate for adverse teacher–student dynamics. --------------- IN CROATIAN: Ova studija istražuje kako međudjelovanje odnosa učenika s nastavnicima i vršnjacima oblikuje učeničku akademsku angažiranost tijekom rane adolescencije. Na uzorku od 6048 učenika javnih osnovnih škola u Sloveniji ispitana je prediktivna moć tih odnosa povrh doprinosa akademskog uspjeha. Rezultati su pokazali da su i pozitivni aspekti odnosa učenika i nastavnika, kao i percipirana vršnjačka podrška, značajno doprinijeli akademskoj angažiranosti. Štoviše, učinak interakcije pokazao je da vršnjačka podrška predviđa angažiranost samo u odsutnosti negativnih aspekata odnosa učenika i nastavnika. Ovi nalazi naglašavaju ključnu ulogu odnosa učenika i nastavnika u poticanju akademske angažiranosti, sugerirajući da vršnjačka podrška ne može u potpunosti kompenzirati nepovoljnu dinamiku između učenika i nastavnika.
